Hayes Valley will be abuzz once more with Urban Air Market, a showcase of local sustainable fashion, this Sunday, September 15, from 11am to 6pm.  Dark Garden will have a booth with a selection of merchandise from the boutique.  Many of our favorite designers, such as Honey Cooler Handmade and Compass Rose Designs are also vending.  You can scope out the list of designers who showcase at Urban Air on the official UAM website.  Though Urban Air is primarily a fashion event, there are also booths of skin care and crafts, a braid bar by FLiP Salon, and food trucks.

This event is literally on our doorstep, stretching along Octavia from Fell St. to Grove, overtaking Patricia's Green and spilling into Linden St.  There will be live music amongst the booths throughout the day.  A typical September day in SF, Sunday's weather is predicted to be balmy with scattered clouds and no chance of rain.  In other words, it looks like a perfectly delightful way to spend a Sunday!  We hope to see you there.

Photographer Spotlight: Laquel Wright

We are very pleased to have Laquel Wright joining us as a featured photographer at The Corset Boudoir this Sunday, September 9.  Laquel is an Oakland based full-service photographer with a focus on boudoir.  She is warm and delightful to work with, and experienced in photographing a diverse crop of women and couples.  In fact, she is currently working on a personal project called Swirl, a portrait photography project showcasing interracial couples in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Below is a selection of work from her portfolio.  We hope Laquel will be able to join us at The Corset Boudoir again in the future; each of our featured photographers has their own unique personality and unique approach, and they rarely appear more than once a year.  If you didn't sign up for tonight's event, we are accepting names on the waiting list: call 415-431-7684 to put your name down.

To see more of Laquel's photography, view her website or "like" her on Facebook, and be sure to check out her blog for boudoir inspiration and tips.

Where did it all begin?

Captain’s Log, Star Date 080613

Who’s with me?

I’m writing today about inspiration and influence, how our early experiences shape who we are today, for better or for worse.

What does Star Trek have to do with anything you ask? And I answer “Uhura.”

She was strong, beautiful, smart, and sexy too. What a role model!

I lived in a TV free home as a kid, but my afternoons at my best friend Tiffany’s house watching Star Trek were precious to me.

I grew up in Santa Cruz, California, a sleepy surf town without much diversity in the early 80s. If you weren’t suntanned and sun-bleached blonde, you didn’t fit – Star Trek opened my eyes to seeing beauty in a-typical places; curvy Uhura, stern Vulcans, fierce Klingons, and let’s not forget Kirk’s green ladies.
I also really enjoyed Lynda Carter's version of Wonder Woman. Doubtless that little waist of hers made an impression on my developing mind. Again, beautiful, strong, and fierce as can be, fighting for justice.

As I’ve developed Dark Garden and our approach to our clients it’s been incredibly important to me that every one of them feel welcome and beautiful. Whether you’re a badass surfer chick, delicate spooky girl, fierce earth momma, gender-neutral crusader, manly bear of a man, hardworking 9 to 5er, soccer mom, or Burner, you are more than welcome to visit Dark Garden and explore your flavor of beauty with us.

We’ve just launched a new website and I hope you’ll find a model with whom you resonate. If not – keep visiting. More pictures are on their way!

CELEBRATING A TIGHT FIT from the New York Times, August 2

The New York Times
August 2, 2013
Augusta Auction Company
New shows are featuring corsets, like this silk boned one from the late 19th century.

CELEBRATING A TIGHT FIT
(this section placed half way down the page)

Antique corsets survive in surprising numbers, and scholars, curators and collectors are scrutinizing them.
Exhibitions at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art have surveyed the topic, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London has organized a traveling show, “Undressed: 350 Years of Underwear in Fashion.” In Manhattan, vintage corsetry has gone on view with bloomers and stockings in bedrooms at the Morris-Jumel Mansion and the Merchant’s House Museum.
Auction prices for the torso-constricting pieces, especially for those in bright colors, have reached the high four figures.
“People are fascinated by body shaping, by what goes on under the garment,” said Karen Augusta, a couture historian and auction house owner. She will be bringing corsets and attachable skirt bustle contraptions to a November sale at her business, Augusta Auctions, in Manhattan. She added, “A lot of it is considered erotic, which brings out the crowds.”
Melanie Talkington, a corset dealer and collector in Vancouver, British Columbia, who has lent about 40 pieces to the current Paris show, said in a phone interview that she keeps learning more about the field. This summer, she has been poring through British manufacturer and museum archives. She owns more than 230 corsets and plans to create a museum for them in Vancouver.
She is protective of the fragile clothing; she installed her Paris loans herself, and she discourages anyone tempted to wear vintage pieces.
“It breaks my heart to see them get destroyed,” she said.
Informed corset collectors instead strap on reproductions, loosening the lacings somewhat at bedtime.
“I loved the soft feeling of being hugged all day,” Sarah A. Chrisman, a writer and massage therapist in Port Townsend, Wash., writes in a book due out this fall, “Victorian Secrets: What a Corset Taught Me about the Past, the Present, and Myself” (Skyhorse Publishing).
The corset has long been unfairly maligned, Ms. Chrisman said in a phone interview. Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, a 19th-century cereal magnate and health proselytizer, set off a widespread anti-corset movement by describing the garments as a “barbarous practice” that caused “painful menstrual derangements.” But he was not quite a reliable denouncer, Ms. Chrisman said, given his other extreme views: he was married but largely celibate, and he called masturbation “a crime doubly abominable.”
She credits corsets for improving women’s posture, diet and self-image. “It’s like a good supportive pair of shoes,” she said.

We are pleased to announce that we have launched a stunning new redesign of DarkGarden.com!  I spoke briefly about it when the boutique got its makeover, sharing some lovely behind-the-scene photos from our lookbook shoot with Joel Aron.  This design has been in the works for a while and we are thrilled to debut it.  Our blog now also reflects the new look.

The new website has a simple shopping cart that allows you to purchase corsets from our Signature, Risqué, and Dollymop Collections in any ready-to-wear size and a variety of classic fabrications.  In addition, the custom corset ordering process can be begun by placing a deposit through the secure shopping cart.

We would like to publicly extend our thanks to Daniel Silveira for the redesign and to our amazing photographic team for shooting our new lookbook of the Dark Garden Signature Collection. We invite you to peruse photos of our beautiful and diverse models and corsets, many more than I'm tempting you with here.
