Original Music for the Ghosts of Unfortunate Heiresses Fashion Show

The original music for the Ghosts of Unfortunate Heiresses Fashion Show (this Saturday January 21st at the Edwardian Ball) composed, performed and recorded for the show by Kerri Pidnow and Alex Kelly on cello and piano is mesmerizing, theatrical, intense and melodic... dreamlike with whispers of creaking doors and mournful bird cry, and a perfect companion to the magnificent garments featured in the show.

Kerri Pidnow. Photo by Kristin Argue

I interviewed sound designer Kerri Pidnow about the project...

What inspired your score for 'Unfortunate Heiresses'?
"The music was created for this show with the adjectives dark, creepy and spooky in mind. I guess I would call it experimental music, though I love the freedom of sound being open and not defined narrowly by standard terms or categories... that said, I love Tom Waits, early Medieval music, The Dresden Dolls... and too many to list!
"How did you and Alex work together?"
"I picked a key and chose pizzicato, and Alex jumped in with piano and we just started playing. It is delightful working with Alex. Even though he is my teacher, when we work together he treats me as an equal. The really challenging thing about designing for a show is that you have to fit a set amount of time and with inflections that are needed for the show".
"How do you make space for music in your life?"
When I am home alone I don't watch T.V.. I listen with all my free time to music...and when I play, when I practice or take lessons, it is like a vacation from the rest of my life. I honestly don't think I could live without it..."
Are you pleased with the 'Unfortunate Heiresses' score?
"I really like it" said Kerri, "it's just weird enough to make me happy"!

Kerri Pidnow has played many instruments, but has happily settled down with the cello. These days she is playing with Big City Orchestra.
Dr. Alex Kelly is a San Francisco based cellist, composer, electronic musician, conductor and teacher. His debut solo album will be out soon.

MACHINE a fire opera at The Crucible

Dark Garden owner Autumn Adamme has created two ensembles for the
over heated world premiere opera 'Machine' at The Crucible in Oakland.
Running through the 21st of January.

"Based on a short story by science fiction author Derek J. Goodman, MACHINE is set in a fiery industrial universe in which workers have sold themselves into a lifetime of servitude. When one worker regains his power of self-determination, the story ignites into an explosive brew of escape plots, alliances, and unlikely love interests. This spectacular performance features two opera singers, a rock singer and percussionists that "play" the scaffolding-like set. Visual effects including a molten metal pour, fire performers and industrial artists such as glass blowers and blacksmiths. MACHINE will deliver the kind of awe-inspiring performance that Crucible audiences have come to expect."

Ghosts of Unfortunate Heiresses Fashion Show

This year the Dark Garden Fashion Show January 21st at the 12th Annual Edwardian Ball is designed by Kalico DeLafay of Dollymop Designs and Holly Bobisuthi. The show is inspired above all by Edward Gorey and dreams of crows in the rain, smoke and shadows, Dresden ironworks, Thai neck rings, Grecian columns cracked where the tendrils of vines have pushed through. This show promises high drama and quirky elegance, and many amazing and new Dark Garden corsets.
With a  education in fine arts sculpture and a back ground jewelry design Kalico DeLafay of Dollymop Designs creates hard core romantic one of a kind accessories including magnificent hats, feather fascinators, cravats and wrist wraps that are available in the Dark Garden boutique. She is also the first Dark Garden Associate Designer having created our fabulously successful Dollymop corset line. Her couture garments are available to order.
Holly Bobisuthi is an accomplished fine art metal smith and textile artisan working primarily by hand on her Teahorse line of hair adornments available in the Dark Garden boutique. This show will debut her impressive skills and a dress maker, accessories maven and designer. Her couture garments are available to order.
The show will again be directed by the fabulous B. Todi who brings her playful and delicious theatricality and dance expertise to this not to be missed yearly treat! Exotic, erotic music design by the amazing alchemical Kerri Pidnow as well as an outrageous gaggle of hot models are sure to delight and dismay...

Corsets, Sports Cars and Love.

A beautiful image of our lace overlay corset by roi brooks of
roijoy photography modeled by Wataya.

"Trying on corsets at Dark Garden is like trying on sports cars or love.  You know it's not something you need, but you try it on anyway to get it out of your system.  Once you do,  you cannot imagine your life without one.

Having experienced both a gain and a loss in 2011, I can assure you that motives to acquire corsets, sports car, and love may be complicated, but the decision is made in a split second, and without regret: a gasp upon seeing one's own beautiful silhouette looking back in the mirror, with tinier than imaginable waist, the inexplicable sense of femininity and power mixed in with sexiness.  It was like being told I had a huge grin on my face when I test drove that sports car, and kissing back that someone who makes me want to become a better person.  You know you need to hold onto it as long as you can.

So my "test drive" quickly turned into an order for a made-to-order corset of my own.  Made-to-order corsets are made with precut patterns of individual size with fabric and style of your choice.  Little alterations are possible with extra charge to make it fit as best as possible.  You could also get custom-made corsets which involves cutting a pattern just for you based on your sizing.

Special thanks to Autumn and Lauren for their expert and friendly advice and help during the process. The shop is also full of beautiful things like accessories, jewelry, sexy under garments, outer wear, and hats.  I can't wait to go pick up my corset (currently it's a seven-week wait) but I might have to visit sooner to take a stroll again in this beautiful *garden* indeed."
